MUBC Members Shine at MUS Sport and Volunteer Celebration Night

January 14th, 2023 - submitted by Matt Roseby

Men’s Big V Basketball Captain Joel Rimes and Head Coach Shawn King were both honoured at the recent Sport and Volunteer Celebration Night, hosted by Melbourne University Sport.

After helping secure a 23-1 season and the 1st seed entering playoffs, Joel Rimes was recognised with the Club Individual Performance of the Year award, backing up his Big V Division 1 MVP, awarded late last year. Rimes saw similar success in 2021, receiving the inaugural University Basketball League MVP Award, UniSport Male Student-Athlete of the Year, and ultimately the University of Melbourne’s Sportsperson of the Year. Joel’s league distinguishments have only helped cement his status as both an elite student-athlete within the University and a prodigious Club player.

Sharing success on the night, Shawn King was recognised as Club Coach of the Year in his first season at MUBC. After leading what was one of the most dramatic single-season turnarounds in MUBC’s history. King helped the Men’s Big V Division 1 hold onto the first-place seed for the entire season, dropping only one regular season game. After the successful season, the Men’s team was promoted to the Big V’s Championship Division, paving the way for even greater successes in the coming seasons.

MUBC is tremendously proud to be home not only to both Shawn and Joel but to the many volunteers and members throughout the Club that are vital to our triumphs. Our volunteers give up countless hours of their time every year to ensure the smooth operation of MUBC’s 19 domestic teams and three Big-V teams. Without these efforts, the MUBC family would not be where we are today. Thank you to all our members and volunteers for their involvement in 2022, and we look forward to an even greater 2023.
