The Big V program is the elite arm of the Melbourne University Basketball Club (MUBC) and aims to provide representative basketball opportunities to the University of Melbourne community. Currently, we are host to over 250 active members who compete in various leagues, ranging from social domestic to the nation-wide University Basketball League (UBL), and the Big V state competition. It is a core goal of MUBC to provide members with representative basketball opportunities at the highest achievable level. In 2019, our women’s senior team were awarded Big V ‘Division Two’ champions, thus earning promotion to ‘Division One’ in the subsequent season.

We are currently looking to recruit a Head Coach to our Big V Division One Women’s program. The successful applicant will have previous experience as a head or assistant coach, with the ability to effectively lead a Division One Women’s program. This candidate will possess necessary player development, organisation and communication skills, as well as aid in the recruitment of players to the Big V program.

We are looking for the following skills and attributes:

• Previous position as a head or assistant coach at a minimum (including details of successful achievements in this area and positive references from players, administrators or stakeholders);

• Clear history and passion for basketball;

• The ability to conduct, train and communicate with players and staff in a professional and informative manner;

• Desire to build a progressive program with an emphasis on University of Melbourne students;

• Capacity to recruit new players to the MUBC program; 

• Have a clear concept or vision about how to achieve success for the MUBC for the 2023 season;

• Have a commitment to developing coaching concepts and philosophies

• Willingness to develop future leaders;

• Possess excellent organisational and communication skills;

• Ability to attend all pre-season, training sessions, games and tournaments;

• Ability to attend all coaching meetings and club-based commitments;

• Increase and actively promote the Big V program at MUBC;

• Adhere to MUBC and Basketball Victoria’s Codes of Conduct and Policies.

Selection Criteria

• Demonstrated ability to positively recruit and develop players

• Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of basketball, including modern trends

• Inclusive behaviours that help foster basketball in the University of Melbourne community

• Clear ethics and values towards open and honest actions

• Dedicated commitment to represent MUBC

Note: since the inaugural UBL season in 2021, our Big V Head Coaches have been presented with the opportunity to take on the additional head coaching role of the respective UBL team. This program is operated by the Melbourne University Sports department and renumerated separately. Historically, coach appointment has been a collaborative process with MUBC. Commitment to head coaching in the UBL program is not a requirement for application here, but instead an additional opportunity open to successful candidates for the Big V head coaching role.
