Sale tournament payback

March 27th, 1977 - submitted by Coops

Here's a gold snippet from coops about the legendary MUBC tent at the Sale tournament circa 1977:

Tournament camping sometimes led to practical joking. Sale tournaments were at Easter and we were regulars, generally camping with the club tent on the Sale Common. Daytimes were for basketball, evening for a few quiet ones around a campfire. One night we stayed up a bit later than optimal, having an 8.00am game the next day. Some of the girls, (Julie Sievers (now Julie Walker), Helen Ryan, …) clearly misunderstood the humorous nature of some of my previous activities, and set about some undeserved payback. As I remember it;

  • Went to bed, had trouble moving pillow…….pillow sewn to sleeping bag…..pulled apart and slid into sleeping bag….
  • Had difficulty getting all the way into the sleeping bag……folded, and sewn up half way down…….
  • Slept well nonetheless, but was in a bit of a rush getting ready for the next morning’s game..
  • Had difficulty putting shorts on……bottom of the legs sewn up……tore that apart and kept on..
  • Track suit pants sewn together at the top……forget them…..
  • Getting cranky, as is the person waiting to drive me to the game…..grab a pair of socks and run out of the tent, dragging 6 pairs of socks behind me, sewn together like a sausage string…
