GENERAL MEMORIES FROM NORM LONGMUIR:

Keith Nicholls was captain, president and the driving force in the club and had been to previous intervarsity carnivals. Graham Pascoe would have also been in the previous year and possibly Neville Quarry. I think for the rest of us it was our first intervarsity.

The venue was the Brisbane Showgrounds, possibly the wool classing sheds. It was the main basketball venue in Brisbane at the time. One of the chief organisers for the carnival and for Queensland basketball in later years was Bob Rayner. I met Bob again many times in later years because he was a close friend of friends of mine who lived in Brisbane. Unfortunately Bob passed away about three years ago.

I remember the Brisbane Intervarsity well because I had to be taken off the train at Taree on the way back suffering from pneumonia. The train did not normally stop in Taree but the team notified the guard on the train that I was ill and arranged for the train to stop at the next station. In those days there was no interconnecting passage way between carriages so the message was sent to the guard by one or more members of the team climbing along the outside of the carriages. I know that your dad and Neville Quarry stayed whilst I was taken to hospital but I don’t know who was the hero that relayed the message. Check with your dad. I spent two weeks in hospital in Taree and was eventually flown home.

Regards,

Norm

EDITORS NOTE: After clarification with Rhys it turns out he and one other picked the locks in between the carriages to gain access to the Guards carriage.
